Several aspects of Research Management are unique:
  • it is usually open-ended (end product is knowledge, not a pre-defined tangible product),
  • the value of the results are difficult to judge,
  • the stakeholders are not always identified and
  • time planning involves an inherent level of uncertainty (risk).

Working in such an environment requires special skills and expertise beyond simple project management.
